The Budapest Centre, along the lines of the latest report of the UN Secretary General “Fulfilling Our Collective Responsibility: International Assistance and the Responsibility to Protect,” believes that one of the best ways to prevent mass atrocities is to educate the new generations, explaining the tragedies, their signals and the tools needed to address the challenges ahead. Teaching about prevention of mass atrocities including genocide, in fact, can be an effective way to support justice, reconciliation and empathy for the individual human being, counter hatred and prejudice, foster appreciation of human rights and promote acceptance of diversity.
The need of educating about the respect of minority rights and fellow human beings is particularly impelling in the societies that have already experienced genocide or mass atrocity crimes. The Visegrad countries, due to the geographical and temporal proximity of the Srebrenica genocide, should in particular contribute to peace and reconciliation efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the genocidal scars are still fresh and social tensions are still high.
The workshop wants to provide a framework for government officials, representatives of international organizations, academia and practitioners involved in human rights, RtoP and education to share lessons learned and discuss the possibilities for advancing education with a look to present mass atrocities. In particular, this event wishes to generate more political will within the Visegrad Group to take all those necessary steps, especially in terms of education, to make “never again” a reality in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The roundtable will consist of three panels:
- Significance and challenges of education in preventing mass atrocities as seen by international actors.
- Lessons learned by practitioners in educating mass atrocities prevention.
- Challenges of education to prevent mass atrocities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
